Balmorhea is named after a tiny town in West Texas, so the epic, mostly instrumental band seemed like a natural fit for State Songs. For their cover of Robert Earl Keen's slow-burning beauty "So I Can Take My Rest," we sent the members to the Waco Mammoth Site. The fairly new building was erected over the spot where a herd of Mammoths was buried 15,000 years ago—it's a fascinating place, and perfect for this rendition of Robert Earl Keen's mournful, gorgeous "So I Can Take My Rest." (The song's first lyric: "I'm tired to the bone.") Balmorhea's latest album is the excellent Stranger, and the band is currently touring Europe—after dazzling the crowd at our SXSW party last week.
