Stevie Wonder really believes in the redemptive power of love

In Hear This, A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well. This week, we’re picking our favorite songs with “fall” in the title.

If I’m being honest, Cloud Nothings’ “Fall In” is probably my single favorite song with the word “fall” in the title, but Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)” comes in an exceptionally close second. The Talking Book closer and High Fidelity highlight is just a tad redundant in the middle segment (“I believe when I fall in love with you it will be forever,” repeated ad nauseum), but ultimately gets real funky, adding a nice dimension to what could have been just a sugary sweet cut about darkness turning into loving redemption. Plus, the opening couplet of the second stanza—“The ma-ny sounds that meet our ears / The sights our eyes be-hold” are sung at such a wacky, staccato pace that I can’t help but be amused.
